What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a medical specialty that deals with the assessment, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of people who are suffering from mental illness or disorder; including schizophrenia; bipolar disorder; major depression; anxiety disorders; personality disorders; eating disorders (anorexia nervosa & bulimia) etc. The psychiatric definition also applies to various other psychological/psychiatric conditions such as self-harm (including intentional poisoning); dementia; ADHD (attention deficit-Counseling is a process of providing and exchanging information and advice to help individuals make better choices or decisions.

It often involves talking things through with someone who has more experience or greater knowledge than oneself. Counselors may be professionals, such as therapists, professional counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists (including clinical psychologists), life coaches (non-professionals), etc. They may also be people that one trusts enough to talk to about personal issues; these types of counselors are referred to as informal counselors. Counseling can help people cope with problems in their everyday living. Counselors have the knowledge and skills to assist other individuals who may be struggling through tough issues that affect daily life, helping them overcome these challenges one step at a time.

 

 

How to Schedule a Behavioral Health Appointment

Variety Care health centers offer integrated health services where a team of professionals work together to best meet your needs. To schedule an appointment with a therapist or psychiatrist, you will need a referral from a medical provider. Your Variety Care Primary Care Provider (PCP)  will examine you and work alongside your behavioral health professional to treat you for depression, anxiety and other mental health issues which may require treatment.

    All Behavioral Health appointments require a referral from a Variety Care provider. If you believe you need immediate assistance, please contact your local primary care provider directly or dial 911 if situation requires it.
